Open in spreadsheet

Hand a result to Excel, Numbers, or LibreOffice in one click.

Most result sets end up in a spreadsheet eventually. Open in Spreadsheet skips the save dialog: SQLly writes the result to a temporary file and opens it in your system's default spreadsheet app - Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice Calc, whatever is registered for the file type.

Where to find it

• Right-click the result grid and choose Open in Spreadsheet. With cells selected, only the selection goes; otherwise the whole visible result (after sorting and filtering, with masking applied).
• The results toolbar's Export menu, for the active result set.
• The Export… dialog, next to Copy and Save, honouring its selection/all toggle.

SQLly

The file is a real .xlsx workbook when the XLSX format is enabled under Settings › Results › Export, and CSV otherwise (UTF-8 with a byte-order mark so Excel keeps accented and non-Latin text intact, and with your formula-guard preference applied). The file is built and opened in the background, so a large workbook never freezes the app. Very large results are capped at the usual export limit, with the same notice a regular export shows; if the file cannot be written or opened, Messages says why.

Temporary files are named sqlly-results-… in a sqlly-spreadsheet folder inside your system temp folder. The folder and files are readable only by your user account, and each open creates a new file rather than reusing a name. They are deleted when SQLly quits, and leftovers from a session that did not quit cleanly are swept after a day. Save the workbook somewhere else from the spreadsheet app if you want to keep it. Desktop app only.
