Competitor watch: clearing out DataGrip issues
All 117 open DataGrip issues on our watch list checked against SQLly: one shared bug fixed, twelve features built, and the rest checked and explained.
No theme today, or rather one big one: every open DataGrip issue on our watch list, all 117 of them, in one sitting. They range from seven days old to one filed in June 2014 that has outlived several laptops. Between them they hold hundreds of votes and a few long threads where people compare timings, swap workarounds, and wait.
Here is how it came out. SQLly shared one bug, a Schema Compare problem with MySQL view definitions, and it is fixed today. Sixteen of the issues asked for things SQLly did not have; we built twelve features to cover them today, and they ship in the next release. Thirteen asked for things SQLly already does, and twenty-two describe bugs we checked for and do not have. Three good ideas went on our list for later. Sixty-one are about engines we do not connect to (Db2 alone accounts for a small village) or about IntelliJ's own machinery, and one we could not read because the tracker answers it with a 404.
Every person named below took the time to write the issue up or add to it, and the credit is theirs.
The one we had
One bug turned out to be ours too. It is fixed today.
Objects are always qualified when comparing views in MySQL / MariaDB
DataGrip DBE-15598, opened 4 years, 5 months ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 4 years, 4 months ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 7 comments.
The reporter keeps many structurally identical databases and wants to know they match. A JetBrains developer tracked it down in 2022: MySQL hands back view bodies with the database name written in. Diagnosed, explained, and then left there for four years.
Credits: reported by Luke Johnson, Dmitrii Suvorov (comment), Luke Johnson (comment).
Verdict: SQLly had this one too. Fixed: schema compare flagged MySQL/MariaDB views as different when only the embedded schema qualifiers differed.
Asked for, and built today
These asked for something SQLly did not do. Each one now has a feature on today's branch, shipping in the next release.
Global search across database object comments
DataGrip DBE-5245, opened 9 years ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 5 years, 2 months ago. State: Submitted. 4 votes, 1 comment.
Nine years old. The only comment is a JetBrains developer restating the two use cases in 2021: find a column by its comment across thousands of tables, and see comments next to the column list.
Credits: reported by Tomasz Wojciechowski, Maxim Sobolevskiy (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: search across table and column comments.
Add table description to quick documentation on a table
DataGrip DBE-8655, opened 7 years, 3 months ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 7 years, 2 months ago. State: Submitted. 2 votes, 11 comments.
In 2019 a JetBrains developer explained that this part of DataGrip is not particularly extensible, so a plugin would hardly help. The thread has been quiet since.
Credits: reported by Yuri Kl, Yaroslav Bedrov (comment), Alexey Sedunov (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: show the table comment in the hover card.
Show comment in data editor right below column name (in transposed view)
DataGrip DBE-8929, opened 7 years, 2 months ago. State: Submitted. 8 votes, 5 comments.
A reply in 2022 pointed out that hovering over the column name shows the comment. The reporter answered that they knew, had said so in the original post, and wanted it under the name. Others asked for the same in 2022 and 2024.
Credits: reported by Steff Missot, Huang Changyuan (comment), Lucy Kornilova (comment), Zhaoheng Huo (comment), Pang (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: show the column comment under the column name in the transposed view.
Export all open result tabs to several files
DataGrip DBE-11875, opened 6 years ago. State: Shelved. 3 votes, 0 comments.
Filed by a JetBrains developer in 2020, then Shelved. Nobody has commented since.
Credits: reported by Maxim Sobolevskiy.
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: export every open result tab to separate files in one go.
Fetch...into statements do not wrap on reformat
DataGrip DBE-17687, opened 3 years, 7 months ago. State: Shelved. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Credits: reported by ahafner.

DBT Projects in DataGrip
DataGrip DBE-19795, opened 2 years, 9 months ago. State: Submitted. 60 votes, 3 comments.
Sixty votes, and the latest comment, from March 2025, notes that dbt Labs now ships its own free VS Code extension. That is a polite way of saying people have found somewhere else to go.
Credits: reported by steveay99, Blodwyn Pig (comment), Anonymous (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: dbt project integration.
External Tables are introspected as regular table in Azure SQL
DataGrip DBE-21509, opened 2 years, 2 months ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 3 comments.
External tables in Azure SQL show up as ordinary tables, which they are not. Two years on, it is still Submitted.
Credits: reported by jorgegap, Vasilii Chernov (comment), Aleksandr Molchanov (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: show Azure SQL / SQL Server external tables as their own kind in the tree and DDL.
Add formatter to data-diff (Compare Cells on JSON columns should compare pretty-printed JSON)
DataGrip DBE-22245, opened 1 year, 11 months ago. State: Submitted. 1 vote, 0 comments.
Comparing two JSON cells that are each one long line is not a comparison, it is a spot-the-difference puzzle. Nobody has commented in two years.
Credits: reported by Ilya Konstantinov.
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: compare two cells side by side, pretty-printing JSON first.
Support packages in MariaDB 11.4
DataGrip DBE-22929, opened 1 year, 8 months ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 22 days ago. State: Ready for test. 0 votes, 1 comment.
MariaDB 11.4 shipped packages; the request to show them in DataGrip is now a year and a half old.
Credits: reported by Tom, Dmitrii Suvorov (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: list MariaDB 11.4 packages in the schema tree.
Display column comments in Data Viewer column headers
DataGrip DBE-23749, opened 1 year, 3 months ago. State: Submitted. 4 votes, 2 comments.
Filed by a JetBrains developer. A user later noted that in many production databases the names are abbreviations and the comments hold the real meaning, and asked for it to be prioritized.
Credits: reported by Anastasia Zhukova, Jared.Christensen (comment), zhangdy2002 (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: show column comments in results grid headers.
Missing source code for MariaDB package
DataGrip DBE-24155, opened 1 year, 2 months ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 22 days ago. State: Ready for test. 2 votes, 1 comment.
Fourteen months old. MariaDB packages show up in DataGrip without their source.
Credits: reported by Anastasia Zhukova, Dmitrii Suvorov (comment).

Credits: reported by Sergey Esin.
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: pick up credentials from the new aws login command for RDS IAM sign-in.
Support line-break formatting for SELECT ... INTO variable lists
DataGrip DBE-26911, opened 2 months ago. State: Shelved. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Credits: reported by Mzy.
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: put SELECT ... INTO variable lists on their own lines when formatting.
DB Diagram toggle to hide table partitions
DataGrip DBE-27327, opened 27 days ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 3 comments.
Credits: reported by Mark Vedder, Aleksandr Molchanov (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: ER diagram toggle that hides partitions behind their parent table.
The table counter is wrongly calculated and partition counter is not shown in Database Explorer
DataGrip DBE-27376, opened 21 days ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 15 days ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 1 comment.
Ten days old: partitions counted as tables make the table count wrong and hide how many partitions there are.
Credits: reported by Aleksandr Molchanov, Leonid Bushuev (comment).
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: group PostgreSQL partitions under their parent table, with a count.
Allow formatting binary columns as lowercase hex
DataGrip DBE-27417, opened 17 days ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Seventeen days old: someone wants their hashes in lowercase. Small and reasonable, so we did it.
Credits: reported by John Spurlock.
Verdict: SQLly lacked this, so we built it: lowercase hex option for binary columns.
Already in SQLly
Feature requests SQLly already answers. We checked each against the app rather than our memory.
Import database connections from other tools
DataGrip DBE-328, opened 12 years, 4 months ago. State: Submitted. 22 votes, 2 comments.
Opened in June 2014, which makes it the oldest item in this batch. Two comments in twelve years, the second from a user who wrote their own import plugin in 2019. Twenty-two votes.
Credits: reported by Charles Wise, Gregory Frank (comment), akmal Sarhan (comment).

DataGrip DBE-15449, opened 4 years, 6 months ago; last word from a JetBrains developer 2 years, 8 months ago. State: Submitted. 26 votes, 4 comments.
Filed by a JetBrains developer in 2022, with twenty-six votes. In 2024 a user asked if it had shipped; the answer was that Submitted means not yet. It still means that.
Credits: reported by Maxim Sobolevskiy, Mark Murawski (comment), Cam Clark (comment), Jose Cruz (comment).
Verdict: SQLly already does this: results already open in the same window, directly below the query.
Allow List Item Chopping in Code Style
DataGrip DBE-15550, opened 4 years, 5 months ago. State: Submitted. 11 votes, 1 comment.
Credits: reported by Bill.
Verdict: SQLly already does this: the formatter's Stacked list style puts each list item on its own line.
New UI for "Show Column List" popup
DataGrip DBE-17485, opened 3 years, 8 months ago. State: Fixed. 10 votes, 3 comments.
Marked Fixed on the tracker, which is the rare happy ending in this batch.
Credits: reported by Lucy Kornilova, Arina Efremova (comment), Yuriy Artamonov (comment).
Verdict: SQLly already does this: the results grid already hides, reorders, finds and resizes columns from its menu, and remembers the layout.

Improve discoverability of the copy with headers feature
DataGrip DBE-25004, opened 10 months ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Credits: reported by Anastasia Zhukova.
Verdict: SQLly already does this: the grid menu has its own Copy with Headers item, and Cmd+Shift+C does it from the keyboard.

Credits: reported by Philipp Menke, Philipp Menke (comment).

Credits: reported by Leon Zhou, Aleksandr Molchanov (comment).

DataGrip DBE-23379, opened 1 year, 5 months ago. State: Submitted. 1 vote, 1 comment.
Credits: reported by Louis Brauer, Eric Siegel (comment).
Verdict: Checked, and SQLly does not have this problem: MATCH(...) parses as a function call, so qualified column names inside it are ordinary column references.

DataGrip DBE-26717, opened 3 months ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 2 comments.
Credits: reported by tlhicks, Aleksandr Molchanov (comment).

DataGrip DBE-27350, opened 24 days ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Credits: reported by evgeniy.
Verdict: Checked, and SQLly does not have this problem: AI and MCP queries run inside a read-only transaction the server enforces, so a DELETE in a WITH clause is refused.
Infinite spinning animation in the result set
DataGrip DBE-27440, opened 15 days ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Credits: reported by Ekaterina Chernikova.
Verdict: Checked, and SQLly does not have this problem: stopping a multi-result batch clears the one running indicator, so no spinner is left behind.

DataGrip DBE-27512, opened 8 days ago. State: Submitted. 0 votes, 0 comments.
Credits: reported by Leonid Bushuev.
Verdict: Checked, and SQLly does not have this problem: SQLly re-reads Oracle package metadata fresh on refresh instead of patching a cached model, so overloads are not recreated.
