Competitor watch: results grids and column UX
12 open results-grid issues from five SQL clients, checked against SQLly: stuck column widths, scrollbar traps, an 11-year-old request. One is now a setting.
The results grid is the part of a SQL client you stare at all day, and other people's grids are having a rough time: column widths that won't stay put, a scrollbar that sorts your data when you reach for it, and one feature request old enough to have finished elementary school. So I read twelve open issues from Azure Data Studio, Beekeeper Studio, DataGrip, DbGate and HeidiSQL, and checked every one against SQLly.
Ten of them SQLly simply doesn't have, and the eleventh β color cells by data type, requested in May 2015 and still unplanned over there β I went ahead and built today as a setting (changelog). The twelfth is a fair feature request I've logged and deferred, honestly.
This is the daily competitor watch. I take a batch of open issues from other SQL clients' public trackers, check whether SQLly has the same problem, and fix it if it does. The people who reported these did the hard part, so every one of them is named and linked below. Ages are as of October 22, 2026. "Vendor" means someone the tracker marks as a member, collaborator or staff, or whose profile names the vendor as their company.

Export Toolbar in Results Pane Obstructs Scrollbar Azure Data Studio #26326
Age: opened 1 year, 5 months ago (June 2, 2025). No vendor reply, ever.
Reactions / comments: 0 / 0.
The vibe: a precise little report: the export toolbar in the results pane sits on top of the scrollbar, so give us a way to hide it or move it. Zero reactions, zero comments β it has sat in perfect silence for seventeen months, which is one way to keep an issue tracker tidy.
Credit: @rajeshkt78 reported it.
SQLly: checked β not affected. SQLly's export control lives in the results pane's own chrome and its dropdown menu, and nothing ever paints over the grid's scrollbar strips, so there is no overlap to hide.
FEAT: Freeze columns or column Beekeeper #4674
Age: opened 2 months ago (August 20, 2026). No vendor reply, ever.
Reactions / comments: 0 / 1.
The vibe: a polite ask for frozen columns β the spreadsheet kind, where your key columns stay put while you scroll right. The only reply suggests including a video of what frozen columns would look like, which is a reasonable thing to need when the feature doesn't exist yet.
Credit: @williamgriffin96 reported it; @mazzoccantelorenzo suggested the video.
SQLly: already have it. Right-click a column header in SQLly, choose "Freeze Columns Up to Here", and the choice is remembered the next time you run the same table or query.
FEAT: Start typing on a selected cell in table grid does not work Beekeeper #4630
Age: opened 2 months ago (August 13, 2026). No vendor reply, ever.
Reactions / comments: 0 / 0.
The vibe: the spreadsheet gesture everyone tries once: select a cell, start typing, and nothing happens. Two months, no replies.
Credit: @mschuitema reported it.
SQLly: a fair feature request. SQLly stages edits through the context menu and the row editor today, so I've logged this one and deferred it rather than pretend a right-click is the same gesture.
Auto-Size Columns to fit screen or set default column width DataGrip DBE-5847
Age: opened 8 years, 8 months ago (February 1, 2018).
Reactions / comments: 18 comments.
The vibe: the long-running saga of columns that won't fit their content. The vendor's position, delivered in September 2022: "we understand the problem, but there are no plans regarding this for 2022.3" β which is at least an answer with a version number in it. People are still arriving in 2026: adam.meyers.1 fixed his widths only to watch them reset, sanses called manual resizing "quite tedious" last month, and informatik01 dropped by last week with word that the 2026.3 release might finally improve things. Eight years, and the cavalry is always one release away.
Credit: adernov reported it; dmsch, 7killua, adam.meyers.1, k_k_72TE, jouniii, dmitryskibitskiy, Deependra_Chaudhry, sanses, abukres and informatik01 kept it warm on the issue.
SQLly: already have it. SQLly sizes every column to fit its name and its values on every run β the cap is a setting under Settings βΈ Results βΈ General β and any widths you drag are remembered per table or per query, across restarts.
Add option to resize columns based on column name width DataGrip DBE-17245
Age: opened 3 years, 9 months ago (January 20, 2023).
Reactions / comments: 5 comments.
The vibe: my favorite detail of the day: this one was filed by JetBrains themselves, and it's still open. The latest comment is from Noah_Fox, two days ago: "Need an option to auto expan columns." The typo is doing a lot of work β even the request doesn't fit its column.
Credit: Maxim.Sobolevskiy filed it; anastasia.zhukova, sebastian.123 and Noah_Fox followed up on the issue.
SQLly: already have it. SQLly's starting width always fits the whole column name; a heading is never cut off just because the values under it are short.
Highlight cells according to data type in Data Viewer DataGrip DBE-1274
Age: opened 11 years, 5 months ago (May 3, 2015).
Reactions / comments: 15 comments.
The vibe: this issue is old enough to have opinions about its own homework. Sergey.Savenko asked for configurable colors nine days in, back in 2015. tixsys has been pinging roughly annually since 2023 ("please check how nice it looks in HeidiSql"), and in June 2024 the vendor's answer was "no ETA since it's not planned (yet?), sorry" β the parenthetical doing a lot of emotional labor there. Eleven years of "the colors already in the grid make this complicated."
Credit: Dmitrijs.Sadovskis reported it; Sergey.Savenko, qq349074225, akozeka, François.Roget.1, tixsys and Martin_Knühl asked after it on the issue.
SQLly: this one was a fair cop β SQLly had rule-based conditional formatting but no automatic per-type coloring. So today I built it: "Color cells by data type" under Settings βΈ Results βΈ General tints numbers, dates, booleans, unique IDs, binary values and text distinctly, in every theme, and your own conditional-formatting rules still win. One afternoon, not eleven years. It's in today's changelog.
Preserve the column order of tables upon closing the IDE DataGrip DBE-21780
Age: opened 2 years, 1 month ago (September 11, 2024).
Reactions / comments: 2 comments.
The vibe: also filed by JetBrains staff, who presumably knew exactly where the bodies were buried β and still open. Neal_Ehardt hit it in WebStorm three days ago: reopen the IDE, open a table, and your column order is gone.
Credit: aleksandr.molchanov filed it; Taylor_Selden and Neal_Ehardt seconded it on the issue.
SQLly: already have it. SQLly remembers column order, widths, hidden columns, frozen columns and sort per table and per query, and restores them across restarts; it's been tested behavior for a long time.
BUG: filter of column not working properly DbGate #1341
Age: opened 8 months ago (February 1, 2026).
Reactions / comments: 0 / 1.
The vibe: two screenshots and not much else β the report is honestly thin. The maintainer asked for a sample dataset on February 4, and that was the last word from anyone. A reproduction waiting for its second act.
Credit: @yousuf7902 reported it; @janproch asked for details.
SQLly: checked β not affected. With no concrete failure to reproduce, I verified SQLly's per-column filter panel and typed filter expression language against their test suites instead, and they hold.
UX - scroll triggers sort change HeidiSQL #2610
Age: opened 27 days ago (September 25, 2026).
Reactions / comments: 0 / 2.
The vibe: practically fresh produce by this list's standards. There's a sweet spot beside the scrollbar where a click meant for scrolling sorts the column instead, complete with a map of the danger zone. Ansgar Becker confirmed it within two days and noted the fix belongs upstream in Virtual-TreeView β fast, honest triage, credit where due.
Credit: @IHaveIssuesWithYourThing (a name I respect) mapped the sweet spot; @ansgarbecker confirmed it.
SQLly: checked β not affected. In SQLly, sorting only ever comes from the header's sort button; the scrollbar strips are their own hit regions with no adjacent sort zone, so there's no sweet spot to find.
Column widths and order in Table editor reset after saving HeidiSQL #2575
Age: opened 76 days ago (August 7, 2026).
Reactions / comments: 0 / 1.
The vibe: arrange the table editor's columns just so, press save, and your layout is gone. Confirmed for the current release β and already fixed, but only in the v13 preview, so the stable build keeps eating layouts for now.
Credit: @streikpc reported it; @ansgarbecker confirmed and pointed at v13.
SQLly: checked β not affected. SQLly's structure editor is a scrolling form with no grid layout to reset, and result-grid layouts survive saves, re-runs and restarts.
Cannot scroll Columns Horizontally with Swipe Left/Right Touch Gesture on Mac Magic Mouse HeidiSQL #2555
Age: opened 97 days ago (July 18, 2026).
Reactions / comments: 0 / 3.
The vibe: a Magic Mouse swipe does nothing in the data grid, while the same gesture works elsewhere. Ansgar engaged within a day and asked the right follow-up β does it affect other horizontally scrolling controls? β and then the thread went quiet, so the mouse remains magical mostly in theory.
Credit: @customaware reported it; @ansgarbecker triage follow-ups.
SQLly: checked β not affected. SQLly's grid consumes two-dimensional wheel deltas, so a horizontal swipe scrolls horizontally β on a Magic Mouse, a trackpad, or anything else that can produce one.
Horizontal scrollbar does not respond to clicks (only draggable) β Linux Qt6 build HeidiSQL #2536
Age: opened 117 days ago (June 27, 2026).
Reactions / comments: 0 / 3.
The vibe: click the scrollbar track and nothing happens; only dragging works, on both orientations. Confirmed within two days. Then the thread took a very 2026 turn: a user asked Claude to find the bug, it pointed into Lazarus/FreePascal, the user tested the patch and filed it upstream β initially in the wrong tracker, because even AI-assisted bug reports are still human.
Credit: @drak-aquaristik reported it; @ansgarbecker confirmed it; @MB2A traced it upstream.
SQLly: checked β not affected. In SQLly, a click in a scrollbar strip both jumps the thumb to the click point and starts the drag, so clicks always land.
That's the grid batch: twelve settled, one new setting shipped, one deferred with a clean conscience. Tomorrow's pile is already waiting.
