SQLly is now on the Mac App Store.

If you'd rather install, update and pay through Apple, you can now get SQLly from the Mac App Store. It's free to download, works with 2 saved connections out of the box, and a one-time in-app purchase unlocks unlimited connections.

What you get

The App Store edition is the same native SQLly: the same editor, IntelliSense, results grid, query plans and database engines as the download from this site. It installs and updates like any other App Store app, and Apple handles the purchase and the receipt.

  • Free with 2 saved connections. Everything else works without paying.
  • A one-time $69.99 in-app purchase removes the connection limit on your Macs. It's paid through your Apple Account, and Restore Purchases brings it back on a new Mac.
  • The PostgreSQL and MySQL client tools are built in. pg_dump, pg_restore, psql, mysqldump and mysql ship inside the app, so dumps and restores work without installing anything else.
  • No account needed. Signing in to a SQLly account is optional, just like the download.

What's different in the sandbox

Every App Store app runs inside Apple's App Sandbox, which doesn't let an app start other programs on your Mac. So the App Store edition can't open a terminal for you, run local AI agent command-line tools or local MCP servers, call kubectl, git or a command-line editor, or download DuckDB extensions. Each of those features says so where you'd use it, and Help → Mac App Store Edition lists every difference. The macOS platform docs have the full list too.

If you rely on any of those, the signed and notarized download from the download page has no such limits. You can install both. They keep their saved passwords in separate keychain groups.

The App Store version is always a few versions behind

Expect the App Store to lag. The version on the Mac App Store will always be several versions behind the one you can download here.

SQLly ships often, sometimes several releases in a week. Every App Store release has to pass Apple's review first, and only one version can be in review at a time. So we don't queue them up. As soon as the last version we submitted is approved, we submit the newest release we have, skipping whatever came out in between. The App Store catches up in steps, and it's never more than one review behind what we've already sent.

That means the App Store is the right choice if you want installs and payment handled by Apple and don't mind waiting a little for new features. If you want every fix the day it ships, use the download from this site. It's the same app, just newer.
